HomeWalk is just part of United Way of Greater Los Angeles’ broader mission of addressing the root causes of poverty and creating a community where everyone can thrive.
Our Mission
To improve the quality of life for everyone in greater Los Angeles by creating pathways out of poverty
What We Do
We’re tackling the issues that can bring about change. By focusing on 3 interconnected areas we are addressing the root causes of poverty:
- Housing and Healthcare: Long-term solutions not short-term fixes
-
- We are investing in permanent supportive housing because emergency shelter and food programs are costly and perpetuate the cycle of repeated crisis
- We are providing rapid re-housing for families in need
- Education: Helping students make successful transitions so that they graduate ready for college and the workforce
-
- By focusing on middle school, we are calling attention to a critical transition period long ignored
- By encouraging joint responsibility for students’ success: parents, teachers and the community -- with after school programs, college prep classes and teacher training, we are preparing students for success
- Job Training and Financial Education: Teaching people to fish
-
- Training people to meet our economy’s needs today, we are matching them to existing jobs
- Through financial education, we are giving people tools that they can use for the rest of their lives
We’re Going Way Beyond Fundraising
- Providing expert research on our community as it grows and changes
-
- Social reports identify challenges and provide a roadmap for change
- Changing the systems that keep people in poverty
-
- Focusing on local and state public policy
- Using our experience to bring the public, private and non-profit sectors together
-
- Investing in programs that make the community a part of the solution and increase the impact of individual efforts
